Courage, Competence, and Connection
The three Cs—Courage, Competence, and Connection—summarize my summer in Washington, DC. I learned about the three C’s from Joseph Castro, Jr., during a NMSHSA Friday Forum. His motivational speeches throughout the internship have been inspiring, and each of these Cs plays a significant role in personal development, relationships, and success.
Regarding Connection, I felt a strong bond with my fellow interns, who came from diverse backgrounds across the nation. One memorable moment was when we all had lunch together with Cleo and Robert on the first day. It made me feel safe and understood, especially as someone from Florida who does not see like-minded individuals often.
Increased Competence was a significant outcome of interning with the United Farm Workers (UFW). Under the guidance of Giev Kashkooli and Lionor Rosio Galindo Cardenas, I learned valuable skills in public speaking, communication, and task performance, essential for the real world. They also helped cultivate stories that provided a positive impact to other farmworkers ultimately helping to oppose a bill that would negatively impact others.
Transitioning to Washington, DC, took immense Courage for me, as my background differed significantly from other interns. Giving testimonies on Capitol Hill during my first Farm Bill forum was one particularly nerve-wracking moment. However, with encouragement from a fraternity brother and the support of Ilda and Cleo, I was able to thrive in DC and embraced the challenge, and I ultimately got better and better as time passed.
To conclude, using the three Cs is how I would describe the positive moments in my external, internal, and summer in DC. My advice to others is simple: be yourself and utilize available resources. This approach allowed me to access this internship and embark on this incredible journey.
