First Step To D.C.

I am brave. That is the only thing I said to myself the day I flew into Washington D.C. I am brave. Sometimes I am a little scared too…change scares me. I've never been this far from Center, CO, however, this part of my life is one of the most beautiful things I have experienced. As a girl who’s never been on a bus or metro it felt like the most intimidating thing to do in the city, nonetheless, I did finish my first day with blisters on my feet from walking all over the city so that's obviously the harder thing to do.

I met my classmates, Hailey and Deida, we had a lot to talk about and instantly clicked. Their interests were like mine; they are adventurous like me, they came from almost the same background as me, they both love talking as much as I do and together, we could probably have our own comedy show! I am glad they are experiencing this with me and I with them. It has been so crazy these first few days, but everyone I’ve met has made me think of things from a different point of view, expanding my knowledge about different types of Bills, looking at the bright side of things, and educating me on subjects I wasn't aware of, and I really enjoy that. The NMSHSA Board of Directors were so welcoming as they listened to what I had been through as a farmworker child and the sacrifices that my family went through to be where we are, they made me feel as if I had the loudest voice in the room.

This first weekend, we went to a parade, and I have never in my life seen a parade last four hours long, but it was something I had to experience in D.C. Everyone is so open minded and there is always someone you can learn from even if it’s from a stranger on the bus. I am excited to be here and anxious for my future. I know I will learn from so many mentors here and create great connections. I can't wait to see the person I become, and the powerful Mexican woman I will turn into. Now let's go be great and soak up the East coast sun!
